Garry Oak (also called White Oak) is a long lived, slow growing, deciduous tree. It can grow up to about 100 ‘ but is usually between 30 and 65’ and has a well behaved root system. Once established, Garry oak is drought-resistant, flood-tolerant, and mature trees are fire-resistant. When it comes to habitat value, Garry oaks are a species of merit, providing an incredibly rich habitat for wildlife. The acorns of Garry oak were eaten by some groups of the first peoples who managed the habitats with frequent low intensity fires, and manually digging. Unfortunately, intact Garry oak ecosystems have become rare, and in some locations are critically imperiled and at risk of extinction.
